In the last 30 years armies of women have entered corporate America, yet there are only 8 female CEOs in the Fortune 500. The New York Times Magazine asked an alarming question recently on its cover. "Why don't more women get to the top? They choose not to." More and more often, women are saying no, no to more promotions, no to more travel, and no to more power. The cover story of Fortune magazine's October 20, 2003 issue drives this point home with the article, "Power: Do Women Really Want It." We'll admit it to you here and now- we are not superwomen- we are work in progress. And so is our Lifestyle section. And finally who are we? We're two women who "connected" 13 years ago when we were both speakers at a national business conference. We are alike in many ways - for most of our careers we've been the only women in the room and we have gone to great lengths to bring other women up the ranks in our organization. We each have 2 young girls, supportive husbands and not enough time in the day to say grace over it all. Both of us continue to redefine success, power and balance. One of us has catapulted up the ladder to become the CEO (with a negotiated 3 day condensed work week) of a division of a Fortune 500 company. The other got tired of the constant travel and roller coaster ride in the venture capital world and has been an independent consultant with a home office for the past 5 years while raising her two small children.

Women are the pulse of our society. We control or influence 80% of all consumer purchases. Female-owned businesses generate $3.6 trillion annually while employing 27.5 million people - more than all the Fortune 500 companies combined.
